Tara's Spinach Salad

1 bag fresh spinach
1 cup sharp grated cheese (or shredded parmesan, mozzarella, etc.)
1 cup cashew pieces (almonds, candied walnuts, etc.)
1 can drained mandarin oranges (craisins, apples, strawberries, etc.)

Poppy Seed Dressing

3/4 Tbsp. poppy seeds
1 Tbsp. grated onion (red is mildest)
1/3 cup vinegar
3/4 tsp. salt
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 tsp. mustard (dry or prepared)
3/4 cup oil 



Grandma's Homemade Vegetable Soup

Soup Bones:  Cover with water and boil 1 hour in large soup pot, skimming off fat. Remove bone. (give to dog!)  This is your broth base and really the secret of the flavor of this soup.

ADD:  Stew Meat, boil 20 minutes (I like to cut up in smaller pieces than you get in the package)
          1 large can stewed tomatoes, diced

Let pot simmer while you cut up and add the rest of ingredients.

ADD:  1 large bag of carrots, chopped
         1 large onion, diced
         1 large green pepper, diced - let these cook while you cut turnips and potatoes
ADD:  6-8 large potatoes, cut up
         3 large turnips, cut-up
SEASONINGS:  to taste
         garlic powder                                 salt and pepper
         parsley                                         sweet basil
         celery salt      
         2 Tbs sugar (optional, but mom says to always sweeten the pot!)

Add water as needed.  Simmer 1 to 2 hours.  This makes a BIG pot of soup and will feed 15 -20.  I always freeze half of it.
